E-News Bulletin (July 2009) Dear LAS Alumni,
This brief e-bulletin gives alumni a brief update on news from LAS. With a growing number of former students remaining in contact with the School, we hope you will forward this on to your LAS friends and encourage them to make direct contact with the Alumni Office at LAS. If you have any comments or suggestions as to how we can better communicate with you or any ideas for alumni activity, please contact us on alumni@las.ch. We will appreciate hearing from you.
Keep up to date with the LAS website and the Alumni section (www.las.ch) For those who have not registered with their username and password, this is a simple process. Also, please send any updates or changes to your personal details to jmclean@las.ch in the Development & Alumni Relations Office.
The ‘Summer in Switzerland’ program is well underway with students from all over the world enjoying a busy and very warm few weeks. The summer program is in two 3-week sessions with a travel week in the middle although many students stay for the full 7-week program. We also have a number of Masters students completing their degree through the Endicott College program based here at our Belle Époque campus in Leysin. With several other language schools during these summer months, the village is thriving – and it’s hot!
Included in this Bulletin:- • Las Vegas Reunion • London Dinner 6 November • Almaty Reunion • 50th Anniversary Events • LAS Alumni Association • A Big Thank You - Annual Fund 2010 • Lost Alumni • The Grand Hotel Redevelopment
Las Vegas Reunion 25-27 June What a great weekend!! Over 85 in attendance and so well organized – it goes to show what is possible when a few people pick up the reins, take ownership and run with it! Well done to all those involved. Some great photos are appearing on the Alumni website www.las.ch/alumni/alumni.html
Jeff Jones who initiated the event with his committee gave his brief thoughts…..….’The Vegas reunion was a positive movement towards bridging people over many years……..it was an awe inspiring time, while reunited with so many people I knew and others I didn’t know…….this has been a life time event for me and many others, we had a great time and thanks to Ian McLean and the school for the support……..We will be in charge of the next big reunion which will take place in Leysin in 2015 ….Hope to see a lot more people……’
London Dinner – Saturday 6 November 2010 Rubens Hotel near Buckingham Palace Please spread the word to all Alums but especially those living, studying or working in the UK about this 50th Anniversary gathering to be held at Rubens Hotel in London (close to Victoria Station and Buckingham Palace). Fred Sharp and Ian McLean will host this event. The cost per person is GBP50, which includes pre dinner drinks, dinner and wine. Please contact Jacky McLean at LAS on jmclean@las.ch
Almaty Reunion in Kazakhstan I was pleased to travel with Fred Sharp to Kazakhstan in May for a very enjoyable and enthusiastic reunion of former students in Almaty. The hospitality shown by the group was outstanding and our Kazakh friendships remain strong as LAS continues to recruit a good number of students each year.
50th Anniversary Events The official 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner will be held here at LAS in the Belle Époque (formerly The Grand Hotel) on Thursday 7 October 2010. We already have a couple of tables of alumni booked and Fred Sharp is hosting a table or two for those who would like to join him. However, there are limited places so it will be necessary to book your place very soon if you would like to attend. Please contact Mrs Jacky McLean on jmclean@las.ch
Other gatherings to mark the 50th are being held in: - Seoul 9 September 2010 Taipei 16 September 2010 Tokyo 18 September 2010 London 21 October 2010 Moscow 12 November 2010 Riyadh & Jeddah December 2010 New York 17 December 2010 Boston 27 April 2011 Washington 29 April 2011
Other events for the West Coast USA, Mexico and Brazil will be announced in due course.
Please contact us in the Development & Alumni Office alumni@las.ch if you would like more information or would like to help us with the coordinating of one of these events.
LAS Alumni Association As mentioned in the March e-bulletin, after years of LAS former students leaving LAS and making their own contact with old school friends, we have now developed a more formal structure to support your ongoing contacts and alumni network. The LAS Alumni Association and the various activities are coordinated from the Office at LAS but now includes committee representatives. Jeff Jones (left LAS in 1978) kindly accepted our invitation to become the inaugural President of the Association and is very keen to expand our alumni relations’ activity. Committee members who have already helped to organize the very successful Las Vegas Reunion last month are Phyllis Stedman, Joy Mortimer, Valorie Tietjen, Brenda Rodriguez Leger, and Robert Peterson.
Anyone interested in helping (we are especially needing alums located in cities or regions outside the USA), please contact Jeff jeff@wodnicki.com or myself imclean@las.ch
A Big Thank You! Annual Fund 2010 Earlier this year we launched the 2010 Annual Fund and we want to extend a big thank you to those who have made a generous contribution towards the various projects. Around $80,000 has been donated so far and as a result we are proceeding with the refurbishment and redevelopment of The Cave, our student social centre in the Belle Epoque building (formerly The Grand Hotel). Other contributions have supported our growing Scholarship Fund and indoor sporting facilities. We are most grateful as the Annual Fund helps to provide ‘the extras’ that are not normally possible in the annual expenditure budget and helps make a difference to what we can offer.
If you can help with a small contribution, we will be most grateful for your support. The projects this year include support for more Scholarships, a Science Observatory, Digital Imaging Technology, Sports activities and Theatre & Projection equipment. Details are found on the alumni section of the website www.las.ch
Lost LAS Alumni – please help us find them! Our Alumni Relations office at LAS is busy every day tracking the whereabouts of our former students but we have a long way to go to know who is where, what they are doing and how to contact them. We do have our School managed database but rely heavily on Facebook (see Leysin American School ALUMNI OFFICIAL PAGE) and your word of mouth. If you are able to help pass this email on to others or let us know any information about yourself or others, please do get in touch with us at alumni@las.ch
The Grand Hotel Redevelopment Throughout 2009/10, a major redevelopment program has transformed the former Grand Hotel into an outstanding school campus for our International Baccalaureate students and eventually when the top floors are completed, nearly 200 students will be accommodated and this will enable the school numbers to increase to 500 students. The project is a credit to the foresight and vision of the Ott Family as LAS’s reputation continues to grow. Photos of the amazing restoration program appear on the School website. The official opening of the building will be on 7th October this year.
I look forward to meeting many of you at one or more of the upcoming reunions.
Warm wishes
Ian McLean Director of Development & Alumni Relations imclean@las.ch Text
